Indian Railways operates over 17,000 trains for Maha Kumbh festival

News in Brief

Over a three-year period, Indian Railways invested ₹5,000 crore to upgrade infrastructure and streamline maintenance, enabling the operation of more than 17,000 trains during the 45-day Maha Kumbh festival. This effort successfully transported approximately 4.5 to 5 crore pilgrims to Prayagraj, marking the largest train operation for any festival in the railway's history.

In anticipation of the Maha Kumbh festival, Indian Railways embarked on an extensive three-year preparation plan, allocating ₹5,000 crore towards infrastructure enhancements and maintenance optimization. This strategic investment facilitated the seamless operation of over 17,000 trains within a 45-day period, quadrupling the number from the previous Kumbh event. The initiative ensured the safe and efficient transportation of approximately 4.5 to 5 crore devotees to the holy city of Prayagraj.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the original target was to operate around 13,000 trains; however, the railways exceeded expectations by running over 17,000 trains without any incidents related to locomotive failures, track issues, or overhead wire malfunctions. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the comprehensive planning and coordination among various railway departments.

To accommodate the increased passenger traffic, freight trains were redirected to the Dedicated Freight Corridors, ensuring uninterrupted movement of goods while prioritizing pilgrim transportation. This strategic move exemplifies Indian Railways' commitment to managing both passenger and freight operations efficiently during large-scale events.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, recognized as one of the world's largest religious gatherings, attracts millions of devotees seeking spiritual cleansing at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. The successful execution of such a massive transportation operation not only highlights Indian Railways' operational capabilities but also reflects the dedication to facilitating cultural and religious events of national significance.
